Will you join our conversation about job searching?

I'm excited to be hosting a conversation about job searching with Matt Lockshin, Claire Waiksnoris and Dave Algoso on April 8, 2025.

We'd be thrilled if you joined us. Bring your questions, ideas, challenges and tips.

Matt and Claire are experienced recruiters and job search coaches who focus on nonprofit advocacy, tech and fundraising people. Dave has been through a recent successful job search and is back in the hunt. It's a wealth of experience and they're all smart, empathetic folks who want to help get people into roles that don't just do good work but help you thrive.

The event is online and free to attend. If you can donate, great. If not, great. Please join and share.

Bright Ideas

Interesting, inspiring, sometimes maddening things I've bookmarked and actually read this week.

This is one of the best things I've read on how local to national right-wing media outrage pipeline operates: How Right-Wing Media Keeps Baiting Chicago (Or – How to Make Propaganda About the Most Boring Parts of Municipal Finance) by H Kapp-Klote.

The structures of power keep our leaders from doing their job. But real power is possible: Underestimated Strength: Finding Power When Leaders Can't by Dawn Teo.

The future of news looks niche (NYTimes gift link) is a conversation with Jessica Lessin of The Information and a growing stable of media startups. Over and over the lesson out there is that there are people who will eat up and trust you if you deliver news they can use in ways they can use it. This is the nexus of the newsletter business, by the way.

Yes, publishers can turn young people into paying subscribers writes Esther Kezia Thorpe in Digital Content Next. But there needs to shifts in thinking about building trust, what's relatable and why, and listening. All this so much applies to nonprofits, too, who for years and years have struggled to connect with anyone under 45.

A good look at some research on how young people get info and rely on it to make sense of the world. We must embrace the next generation of news consumers and creators writes Jeremy Gilbert on the Lenfest Institute site.

We Can't Give in to Fear by Marc Elias of Democracy Docket.

So much winning. Canadians now see the US as the most serious disinfo threat by Ethan Zuckerman. Who can blame them?

Why Kind Workplaces are More Successful by Kia Afcari for Greater Good Magazine. (ht Annemarie Dooling)

A quick pitch: It takes a fair bit of time to put Future Community together. If the content is valuable to you, consider becoming a paid member. 💜
That's it. Thanks.
